Arc Browser Discontinued? Best Alternative

Is Arc browser discontinued?

The short answer: Pretty much.

On May 27th 2025, The Browser Company has announced that they have no plans to continue developing Arc outside of providing minimal security fixes. A sad day for sure.

But the writing was on the wall a while before that. In fact, one of their biggest regrets was not deciding to discontinue development on Arc sooner:

“What would we do differently? I would’ve stopped working on Arc a year earlier.”
- CEO Josh Miller

But wasn't Arc pretty popular?

In recent years, the Arc browser was one of the most talked-about browsers on the web. With its sleek design and unique approach to managing tabs, it was a great option for users who want a clean, organized browsing experience.

One of Arc’s most popular features are what’s known as spaces, which allow you to organize the tabs for a given project into separate browsing environments — making it easier to stay focused on one thing at a time, and seamlessly context switch between projects.

With users gushing about how spaces had transformed their workflow, people assumed that things were going pretty well for Arc.

Then why is the Arc browser being discontinued?

When The Browser Company raised over $100 million in funding from venture capitalists, trying to "build a small, profitable company with a great team and loyal customers" was never goal. From the moment The Browser Company took that kind of money, they had little choice but to chase a home run.

For venture investors, anything less than a 10x return just isn't interesting. With The Browser Company's last fundraising round valuing them at roughly half a billion dollars, that means they need to build a company worth at least 5 billion in order to make their investors happy.

So while even The Browser Company admits that Arc had a sizable passionate base of power users, it just wasn’t the mass-market success their investors bet on.

Reason Arc browser is being discontinued

AI, on the other hand, might be. And as we explained, that's likely a risk they have no choice but to take. Which is precisely why The Browser Company is pivoting away from Arc to focus solely on their new AI-powered browser, Dia.

While understandable in light of their fundraising history, that decision leaves Arc’s users in a tough spot, with many users taking to Reddit to voice their displeasure with the new AI focus.

Arc browser users seeking alternative

Many had hoped that if The Browser Company was ceasing development, at the very least they would open source Arc so the community could carry the torch forward. However, Arc and Dia share the same proprietary IP, and investors still need a return from Dia, so open sourcing Arc is simply off the table.

To have Arc discontinued is a brutal outcome for people who genuinely loved the product. And for many, it’s even shaken their trust in The Browser Company in general.

Best free Arc browser alternative

If you’re looking for something to fill the Arc-shaped hole in your workflow, Workona is the best alternative.

In fact, Workona pioneered the concept of “spaces” back in 2017 — long before Arc arrived — and today, over a million users rely on Workona to organize their work and focus on what matters.

Whether you’re juggling multiple projects, or bouncing between work and personal browsing, Workona gives you the same productivity benefits that Arc users love.

Our features cover much of what made Arc great: spaces, tab management, and seamless cloud sync — all available inside the browsers you already use, including Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Brave. And we’re pretty confident those browsers aren’t going anywhere anytime soon!

But after what just happened with Arc, you might be wondering:

“How do I know Workona won’t just be discontinued too?”
- You, probably

The answer is that we have chosen a different path than The Browser Company.

Despite raising roughly $6 million in funding ourselves, we’ve stayed lean and focused on building Workona into a sustainable, profitable, customer-first company, and we have our investors' full support to continue doing exactly that.

We’re also not betting the company on a moonshot, or trying to force AI into your browsing experience. We think Chrome and Edge will almost certainly do a great job the latter themselves soon anyway.

Instead, we're remaining focused on continuing to make your work the browser feel more under control — just as we have for the better part of the last decade. No pivots. No sunsets. Just delivering a product our users love — and pay for directly.

Try Workona free today to keep the Arc-style workflow you love — without wondering if your new setup is going to disappear next year.
